Widespread clashes on West Bank

A widening hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners who are demanding prisoner-of-war status in Israeli jails was accompanied yesterday by demonstrations and rallies throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem. At least three violent clashes left 14 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers injured.

Arafat tries to assuage concerns on May 4 state

By David Makovsky, Ha'aretz Diplomatic Correspondent

In a speech yesterday, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat sought to allay Israeli concerns about a Palestinian state, insisting among other things that such an entity would not align itself with any country hostile to Israel.
