EU envoy hopeful of talks with Syria soon

  The Associated Press

DAMASCUS - The European Union's special envoy to the Middle East said yesterday he is hopeful peace talks between Syria and Israel will resume soon.

The envoy, Miguel Moratinos, who met for two hours with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, said all sides appear to be cooperating with each other to hasten the resumption of the peace talks, which were suspended in February 1996.

Syria is "quite encouraged not only by the political platform of Barak but also about his recent statements" signaling his willingness to work for peace with Arabs, Moratinos said.

"I found a lot of basis to be optimistic in the term of office of Israel's new prime minister ... and we hope that in the next few weeks and months we can see improvements and resumption of talks between Syria and Israel," he said.
