| India dumps Aussies from ICC Trophy |
| By Reuters |
| India bundled world one-day cricket champions Australia out of the ICC Knock-out Trophy at the quarter-final stage yesterday, beating them by 20 runs. Chasing 266 to win, Australia at one point on 159-3 seemed well on course despite having their innings reduced by two overs because of their earlier slow bowling rate. Although opener Mark Waugh fell cheaply for seven, Adam Gilchrist (33) and Ian Harvey (25) repaired the damage before Michael Bevan (42) and Ricky Ponting (46) put on 73 for the fourth wicket. But the Australians were left needing 77 to win in 11 overs with just three wickets in hand. But when Brett Lee smashed a car windscreen with a six he hit out of the ground it seemed just possible the Australians could pull off a miracle. But the dismissal of veterans Steve Waugh for 23 when the score was on 224 disheartened Lee who followed his captain back to the pavilion two balls later. Waugh offered no excuses for his sides poor performance. It certainly wasnt good enough for an A ustralian side, he said. Im certainly hurting inside... Well cop it in the papers tomorrow and we will deserve it. |

The 36-hole matches will resume this morning and the final will be held later in the day. Montgomerie was six under par through 14 as he continues to thrive on a course where he hardly puts a foot wrong. |
