Ron wants to face Or Commission as a cop
By Nicole Krau, Sharon Gal and Yariv Tikolsker Ha'aretz Correspondents
The Northern District Police commander, Alik Ron, said yesterday that he would like to stay on in the police force until the end of the work of the Public Commission of Inquiry into the October events that resulted in the killing of 13 Israeli Arabs by police.
Ron had made arrangements with the previous police chief, Yehuda Wilk, to leave the police force in July 2001, at which time he planned to begin university studies. However, Ron says he would like to appear in front of the Or Commission in police uniform, not as a private citizen, since he commanded the police force which confronted the Arab demonstrators.
Also yesterday, the Petah Tikva Magistrate Court remanded in custody, for the third time, the commander of the police station in Misgav, Guy Reif, suspected of falsifying information regarding his involvement in quelling the October riots. Reif is also suspected of firing gunshots at his own police station to create the impression that Israeli Arabs were in revolt.
The police internal affairs division presented the court with confidential information regarding the Reif investigation.
