Rabbinate shuts down Arab factories
By Haim Shadmi
The Chief Rabbinate has stopped sending kashrut inspectors to 31 Arab-owned canned food factories in the Galilee. The plants have thus essentially been forced to close their doors, as they can no longer sell their goods to the major supermarkets. The rab binates decision came after an inspector was stoned and hurt on his way home from a Tira factory. The plants owners charged that the rabbinates decision constituted collective punishment. The rabbinate, however, said that its decision was not based on the fact that the plants are owned by Arabs, but on their location all are situated in Arab towns. The rabbinate added that it would not resume sending inspectors to the plants until the police tell them it is safe. (Avi Shmoul) Border policeman still in critical state Shimon Ohana, the border policeman shot by Palestinian snipers in Jerusalems Gilo neighborhood on Tuesday, is still in very critical condition. He was operated on twice Tuesday night for heart and lung injuries, and is currently in the intensive care un it at Jerusalems Hadassah Hospital. However, the condition of the two soldiers injured in Abu Dis on Tuesday has improved, and they are expected to be released from hospital in the next few days. A woman from the settlement of Beitar, near Jerusalem, wh o was severely injured by stone-throwers three days ago, is also now improving.

The U.S. Federa l Drug Administration decided to switch to a mercury-free vaccine some 10 months ago and the Israel Neo-Natal Association recommended the same policy. Use of the new vaccine is expected to begin in Israel in January 2001.
